Hey! My name is Lauren. I’m a queer and trans non-binary journalist from Tennessee. I’ve been working as a freelancer for the past three years, with bylines in Teen Vogue, The Nation, Scalawag Magazine, 100 Days in Appalachia, and others.
My reporting has always been informed by my experiences and love for the LGBTQIA+ community, and, while independent and freelance journalists like Erin Reed, Katelyn Burns, and Marisa Kabas work thrice as hard just to tell our stories in the way that we deserve, mainstream news organizations continue to fail us. I’m sick of it, and that’s why this newsletter exists. Yellow Belly is a push against an elitist industry that still fails to tell the stories that matter most. It’s a honest, transparent, and personal love letter to you, tired news consumers who just want to know what’s going on.
I’ve decided to host my newsletter on WordPress instead of Substack, Beehiiv, or Medium, following my choice for Yellow Belly to be completely independent. I’m on their Personal Plan for a year, which gives me enough time to test the indie journalist waters. If Yellow Belly is truly something you can get behind, consider subscribing. Even with a free subscription, you get to show me that this is still worth the effort.
